About this series:
More than 50 years after its premiere in the fall of 1951, TV’s legendary sitcom about bandleader Ricky Ricardo, his zany wife Lucy and their friends Fred and Ethel Mertz continues to keep generation after generation in stitches. The series’ origin stemmed from a popular radio sitcom of the 1940s called My Favorite Husband, which starred Lucille Ball and Richard Denning. Original plans were simply to transfer the radio hit to the new medium of television. Ball, however, insisted that her TV husband be played by her real-life spouse Desi Arnaz. The rest is TV history. Arnaz revolutionized television with a three-camera filming technique still in use today (the idea was born of his and Lucy’s desire to remain in California, rather than relocate to New York, where most television shows originated at the time). For Lucille Ball, the series provided a showcase for her peerless slapstick artistry, and enabled the former “B” movie queen to take her place alongside the likes of Chaplin, Keaton and the Marx Bros. as one of the greatest clowns of the 20th century.
